Thai Massage: Traditional Healing

example2

Traditional massage has long been used in Thailand as a means of treatment and therapy and is considered both a science and an art. Shaped by Indian, Chinese and other South East Asian practices over thousands of years a particular style of massage known as nuat phaen boran rose to prominence in Thailand.

The philosophy of nuat phaen boran is based on the repositioning of sen, or tendons, releasing muscle stress through the application of pressure and balancing the flow of air around the body.

Traditionally Thai massage has been thought of as a form of treatment for various illnesses, especially before the introduction of modern medicines. More recently massage has become as much a leisure activity to be indulged in as a form of therapy for mind and body.

Massage is commonly practised amongst the Thai family at home and as such has become a tradition passed through generations. You might find that many Thai people seem to have the ability to administer a good impromptu shoulder massage, this is why!

Massage has become something of a social tool between Thai family and friends, building and strengthening relationships through touch. Don’t be surprised if you walk into a shop or restaurant to find the staff massaging one another’s hands, shoulders of heads. It’s just a means of relaxing, passing the time and making someone else feel good.

There are many opportunities for tourists to experience authentic Thai massage while in Thailand. Major towns and cities have many businesses offering massage and spa treatments. These range from small road side based businesses with simple portable loungers offering foot massage to fully equipped, air conditioned spa and therapy centres. Some businesses offer extra facilities such as herbal saunas and body wraps, perfect to cleanse the body after a mountain trek!

If you have a specific muscle problem which needs tending too, the local hospital is almost certain to have a mor nuad, a qualified massage therapist who may be able to offer a series of treatments tailored to your needs. If your problem is less serious, a private business may be able to do just the same.

Those wanting to learn how to massage can do so by enrolling at one of Thailand’s massage schools. There are many in the Northern city of Chiang Mai as well as in Bangkok, most notably the famous Wat Po Massage School, as well as in many other areas nationwide.
